Ship Halted After Tragic Loss of Elderly Lady Stranded on Remote Island

A 60-day journey around Australia was terminated following the death of an elderly woman who was left behind by the cruise liner on a remote island.

The passenger had been walking on the tropical location with other travelers from the Coral Adventurer, but parted ways from the excursion for a pause. The liner sailed away leaving her and returned several hours later after the crew discovered the woman was not present.

A large-scale search operation discovered her body the next day.

Investigative bodies are investigating the tragedy, alongside police and the official investigator.

Chief Executive of the voyage organizer announced that guests and staff on the ship were notified that the rest of the voyage had been terminated due to the "unfortunate death and prior technical problems".

Via official communication, he added that passengers would be given a full refund, and said the company was working "to coordinate the homeward trips of the individuals via private aircraft".

Officials also published an revised statement, and said they had "issued a order to the Master" preventing any new passengers from entering the liner.

The official said that they would inspect the liner in Cairns upon its arrival.

Chronology of Events

The liner first departed Cairns on the 24th of October, and was merely two days into the journey at the time of the 80-year-old's demise. Lizard Island was the opening port on the voyage.

Guests on the vessel - who usually pay tens of thousands of currency to take part in the cruise - were ferried there for a daily excursion with the option of trekking or snorkeling.

Family Response

The daughter of the victim said that her relatives was "shocked and grieved that the liner left Lizard Island after an organised tour without my mum".

In her statement, she characterized her mother as an "energetic elderly person" who was a participant of a hiking organization.

"Based on limited information we have been provided, it appears that there was a breakdown of responsibility and common sense," she said.

She added that she hoped the investigation would be able to determine what "the operator should have undertaken that might have preserved Her life".

"We understand from the police that it was a exceptionally warm afternoon, and mother took sick on the hill climb," she stated.

"She was asked her to return, without accompaniment. Then the boat sailed away, seemingly without doing a passenger count.

"At some stage in that sequence, or shortly after, mum succumbed, without company."

Organization Reaction

Through an announcement, the CEO confirmed that the operator was "cooperating fully with investigators to assist their investigation".

He stated that the firm was "extremely apologetic that this has transpired" and had extended its full support to the relatives.

Cruise Industry Practices

The ship serves up to 120 passengers with 46 crew, according to official data. It was specially constructed to enter distant regions of the nation's shoreline and is fitted with "small boats" - compact vessels used to take travelers on land visits.

Incidents of this nature are uncommon, and cruise ships have systems to document which travelers are getting on or disembarking, according to industry experts.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] on the ship just isn't an option," a specialist commented.

Shipping companies take these processes with great importance and have "advanced technology in place to avoid such incidents from happening," the specialist continued.

"This is presumably a shocking - and sad - single occurrence."
